Woodworking & Furniture Design

I first started working with wood in junior high back in the mid '60s. I'll never forget the first time I looked at finished mahogany and how the grain shimmered and changed color in the light - and cutting open a stump of the 'monkeyball' tree (Osage Orange) and finding a beautiful lemon yellow hardwood which when finished, surpassed even the magical brilliance of mahogany.

I didn't do much with wood in high school, but the first thing I did when I went to college, commuting back to home, was to build my first loft in my parents' home. The following year I moved into the fraternity house and built my second loft, which stood head and shoulders over the first one. The loft was a place where I kept all that was important to me, where I visited with my friends, and in essence became synonymous with home. In a sense, this website reminds me a lot of how I felt about the first two lofts, and that's how I came up with the name for this website.

Anyway, to make a short story long, I have done many projects with wood, some of which have been my largest and perhaps greatest endeavors. Unfortunately, 95% of all the photos I have taken over the past several decades are color slides and I have to find a quality way of getting these to the Web. I also have yet to photograph several of these pieces. Click on any of the thumbnails below and a larger image will download.

I made my waterbed of solid teak and mahogany. It is supported by an interlocking foundation of 3/4 inch plywood in the interior and all the interior compartment space is usable cabinetry. Gross weight when full is over 1 ton.
